The review from Ars Technica stated that the sound quality of the HomePod was "pretty good, rich and full for its size, better than the Sonos One but probably not $150 better, a galaxy ahead of the Echo." The review from The Verge praised the HomePod's automatic acoustic calibration system, and felt that it sounded "noticeably richer and fuller" than competitors such as the Sonos One (described as sounding "a little empty") and Google Home Max (described as being a "bass-heavy mess"). Greenhouse gas emissions for production, expected use and recycling for the HomePod are estimated at 146 kg CO 2e. The 13.4 software update, released in March 2020, changed the OS from an iOS code base to a tvOS-based system. HomePod initially did not allow multiple users to use the device, but multiuser support was added with the release of iOS 13.2. ĪirPlay 2 and multi-room, multi-speaker support were announced in February 2018, and released in September 2018 in iOS 12 along with additional features such as multiple named timers, Find my iPhone, Siri shortcuts, the ability to make, receive and screen phone calls directly on the HomePod, and the ability to search for songs using the lyrics. The HomePod does not officially support audio-in from Bluetooth sources. HomePod can serve as a sound bar within a home entertainment system when selected through an Apple TV. The HomePod mainly supports Apple's own platforms and technologies, including Apple Music, iTunes Store purchases and Match, iTunes podcasts, Beats 1 radio, and AirPlay (with limited third-party support for internet radio services iHeartRadio,, and TuneIn coming in the fall of 2019), while an iOS 11 device is required for initial setup. Siri can be used to control the speaker and other HomeKit devices, and can be used to conduct text messaging and voice calls from an iPhone. The system-on-a-chip is the Apple A8, which Apple previously included in the Apple TV HD, iPod touch (6th generation), iPad mini 4 and iPhone 6/6 Plus. It has seven tweeters in its base and a four-inch woofer (Apple does not specify Hz frequency range) towards the top, as well as six microphones used for voice control and acoustic optimization. The HomePod has a rounded, cylindrical shape, and has a small touchscreen on its top. The second-generation HomePod was announced on January 18, 2023, and released on February 3. The first-generation HomePod sold an estimated 1 to 3 million units through August 2018. The HomePod received mixed reviews: it was praised for its design and sound quality compared to other speakers of its price, and criticized for lack of third-party support and high price compared to other smart speakers. Its planned December launch was delayed: Apple began taking orders on January 26, 2018, and released it on February 9, 2018. The first-generation HomePod was announced on June 5, 2017, at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. It is sold alongside the HomePod Mini, a smaller and less expensive variant introduced in 2020. Designed to work with the Apple Music subscription service, the HomePod incorporates beamforming and eight speakers and is sold in two colors: white and space gray. I think the extras that have been included, and will continue to appear in future issues, tell a really neat story that enhances the overall Roche Limit experience. That’s one of my favorite parts, and it’s such a testament to the dexterity of the comics medium that you can build your world in such a tangential way. Will this continue through the whole series? And is this stuff in the collect of is just for the single issues? N: One of my favorite things about Roche Limit is the back matter packed into each issue. In a sense, though, Kyle and Matt are a better fit for volume two-Kyle’s layouts and Matt’s color selection make the entire thing feel like a dream*, which is so perfect for Clandestiny. And, man, they had huge shoes to fill with Vic and Jordan, who did a brilliant job with volume one. MM: Man, Kyle Charles and Matt Battaglia killed issue one. How did you go about bringing the new art team onboard and can we expect another team to step in on volume three? The deeper I’ve gotten into the plot and these characters, the more I’ve realized that I may need more space to tell this story the right way. I think it might extend beyond the proposed 15 issues by a few, but nothing like a whole new volume. Granted, I’ve discovered some things along the way, which is one of the most exciting things about the process, and I continue to grow the story out. I’ve known exactly where the series is heading from the start. I could have milked this for some ongoing money! MM: If I was a smart man, I would’ve kept quiet about the whole trilogy business until after issue #1 came out. Did you conceive the whole thing from the beginning or was it fleshed out after the success of volume one? Blade Runner might be my favorite film of all time, but I love the Alien franchise as well.Īlso, you have some Lost in there, in the sense of having a cast of characters arriving at a mysterious place that maybe-just maybe-they are supposed to be for a specific reason. It’s funny, because until I started Roche Limit, I never knew what a Ridley Scott fan I was. I think there’s some Prometheus in there as well. MM: Aliens for sure-nail on the head right there. What works are influencing this second story arc? So far, it almost has an Aliens feel. N: The first five issue have major Blade Runner vibe, that sort of street level science fiction. The common thread, for sure, is the place and what Roche Limit, as a series, has promised so far-strong characters, cool sci-fi, all grafted on some deeper existential questions. I know that’s a bit of an obtuse answer but, really, if it was the characters you were invested in, as a reader, then Clandestiny is going to feel really different (but with new characters to love, I promise) if you were digging the thematic stuff, then Clandestiny is a going to feel like a natural continuation of what’s been established so far. I guess it’s all about perspective and what you got from the first volume. How different is Clandestiny going to be? N: So, judging from the first issue of Volume Two, it looks like Roche Limit is making a major shift in both look and feel. It’s only ten bucks and you won’t regret it. When you finish up reading this, get your butt to the store and order the Roche Limit trade paperback that hits finer comic shops 3/25. To get the real scoop on Clandestiny, we had a few words with writer Michael Moreci and the new art team of Kyle Charles and Matt Battaglia. Quite simply, there is no escaping Roche Limit. But the place – that dark, lurid place – is relatively the same. Clandestiny starts long after the end of the last issue, with a whole new cast of characters and a whole new feel. Volume one started as murder mystery, before taking an abrupt turn into existential horror and left us adrift, the fate of a world unknown. It haunts the same space, a colony where man has struggled to build a new home, but the story itself shifts. Volume two of Roche Limit has the subtitle Clandestiny and it appears to be a sharp departure from what came before. If you have not been reading this Image Comics series, you have made a huge mistake, one that you need to correct by immediately purchasing the collection of Roche Limit volume one. Thankfully, Michael Moreci is bringing us more of the epic science fiction series and our souls are so ready to jump back into the world of drugs, violence, space, murder, magic, and mystery. It broke our hearts in two while leaving us craving more. The first volume of Roche Limit came to a close with a literal and figurative bang.
